Alice Lucille Shirk

Alice Lucille Shirk, 92, of Red Wing, MN, formerly of Waterloo, IA, died peacefully Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Loving Residence Assisted Living. Alice was born March 21, 1924 in Cedar Falls, IA, the daughter of Joseph and Myrtle Shirk, and the middle child of 7 brothers and sisters.
Alice married Harlan Shirk in Omaha, Nebraska on November 26, 1945.
Alice worked for John Deere tractor works in Waterloo, Iowa during World War 2. After the war and marrying Harlan, she worked as a medical assistant in a local hospital and a dental office. Alice was an avid gardener. She was also a member of the South Waterloo Church of the Brethren. Of all her interests, accomplishments and activities, Alice most enjoyed being a grandmother - both to her own grandchildren and to all the daycare children she and Harlan cared for over the years.
Alice is survived by: sons Dan (Yvonne) Shirk and Jon (Jane) Shirk; grandchildren Amy Shirk; Joshua Shirk; Nathan Shirk; Maggie Shirk and Christopher Shirk; and great granddaughter Avayla Shirk. Preceded in death by spouse Harlan Shirk; daughter Diane Shirk; grandson Zachary Shirk; parents Joseph and Myrtle Shirk; brothers Harold Shirk, Malcomb (Mike) Shirk, and Joe Shirk; and sisters Winifred Sandberg, Virginia Mortimer, and Helen Shirk.
A private family internment service will be held in Red Wing at a later date. Memorials preferred to the South Waterloo Church of the Brethren.
