Alvin J. Waller

January 4, 1944 — March 17, 2017

Alvin James Waller, 73, of Welch, died unexpectedly on Friday, March 17, 2017 at his home. He was born January 4, 1944, in St. Paul to William and Anna (Lyden) Waller and graduated from Harding High School in 1962. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps, serving a four-year term during the Vietnam War. After his service time, he married Susan von Rothkirch in 1968. Together they had three children, later divorcing. Alvin worked for North Star Steel and also worked overseas for ISCOTT. He later worked for Intek, retiring in 2011. Later in life, he married Marjorie Gartner and she died in 2009. Alvin always maintained his hobby farm throughout his life-as he'd say it's a little bit of everything and not a lot of anything. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, shooting and reading, especially about history. He was a life member of the NRA. Alvin was always proud to be a Marine--once a Marine, always a Marine. Semper Fidelis.

He is survived by his daughter, Cori (Marc) Myer; son, Rodd (Michelle) Waller; step-son, Michael Gartner; several grandchildren; 2 brothers, Gary (Jean) Waller and Bill (Nancy) Waller and a sister, Diane Struck. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Melanie and his wife, Marjorie.

A gathering of family and friends will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 24, at the Hastings Legion Post 47, 50 Sibley St., Hastings, MN. Burial with military honors at Fort Snelling National Cemetery will be held at a later date. Arrangements handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
