Arne Alan Hunstad

November 19, 1938 — March 28, 2018

Arne Alan Hunstad, 79, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born in Aberdeen, SD to Mandrup "Ted" and Ethel (Ihde) Hunstad. He graduated from Aberdeen Central in 1956. He served in the US Army from 1956-59 and spent part of his service in France where he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. Following an honorable discharge, he studied at Northern State in Aberdeen for a year before transferring to South Dakota State University, where he earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1963. During his college years at SDSU he noticed a lovely lady sitting in the lunchroom. It took him 2 weeks to figure out her name but the ever-persistent Arne prevailed! He married the love of his life, Judith Hartmann, on June 8, 1963. They moved to Red Wing in 1971, where he was employed at NSP, later Xcel Energy, which he retired from in 1996.
Arne enjoyed his time singing and traveling with the Red Wing Singers. He loved seeing the world, especially on the cruises he and Judy would take. He also enjoyed playing bridge, listening to his extensive collection of classical music, eating at his favorite restaurant, Wiederholt's, buying and learning the newest technology, sailing on Lake Pepin in his sailboat, watching Jeopardy and practicing yoga. He helped and taught countless people and made friends wherever he went. He was brilliant, compassionate, selfless and will be greatly missed by many. Sail on, Dad, sail on.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judith of Red Wing; daughter, Julie (Andy) Hunstad-Menke of Jordan; son, David (Jennifer) Hunstad of St. Louis, MO and 2 granddaughters, Lauren and Sara Hunstad of St. Louis, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Larry Wayne Hunstad.
A visitation for Arne will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Memorials are preferred to the Sheldon Theater of Performing Arts in Red Wing. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
