Bill Hammer

July 31, 1921 — April 10, 2015

George "Bill" Hammer age 93 of Lake City passed away April 10, 2015 at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center in Wabasha.
Bill was born July 31, 1921 in Milwaukee, WI to George and Phyllis (Baker) Hammer. He grew up in Milwaukee and graduated from West Division High School in 1940. After the War he resumed studies at the University of Minnesota and received a B.S. degree in Forestry Management. Bill served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and was stationed in the European Theater. Bill's plane was shot down over Germany and he was a P.O.W for 9 months in Stalagluft #1 Barth, Germany. Bill married Edith Norgaarden September 16, 1949 in Minneapolis. They lived in various places in northern Minnesota after they were married and he worked for the DNR in the Forestry Division. They moved to Lake City in 1965 and Bill worked as the area Forestry Supervisor for 32 years until retiring in 1983. After retiring Bill made fishing lures and sold them in local sporting goods stores under the name "Bill's Jigs" for 40 years.Bill was a member of First Lutheran Church, American Legion post #110, VFW post #8729 and also the Lake City Sportsman's Club. Bill was an avid outdoorsman all his life.
Bill is survived by his wife Edith, a son David (Lois) of Lake City, two granddaughters Leslie (Tom) Brindley of Minneapolis and Erin (Chad Wormsbecker) Hammer of Prior Lake and three great grandchildren, Jonas, Lisbon, and Stella. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday April 14, 2015 at 11:00 AM at First Lutheran Church in Lake City with the Rev. Duane Holst officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Lake City. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 7 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel Lake City. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church. Military Honors will be performed by VFW Post #8729 and American Legion Post #110. Memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church. Online condolences may be placed at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
