Catherine Nelson Ullrich

Catherine Marshall Ullrich, age, 108, died Sunday, April 30, 2017 at her home. She was born October 16, 1908, in Red Wing, Minnesota, to Peter A. and Mary (Marshall) Nelson. She graduated in 1927 from Red Wing Central High School and in 1931 from the University of Wisconsin in Madison with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and history.
She married Harold R. Ullrich on July 16, 1935, in Red Wing, and they lived in Chicago until moving to Red Wing in 1940. He died in 1973.
Catherine was active in the Goodhue County Historical Society, the Goodhue County Democratic Farmer Labor Party, the Art History Club, the League of Women Voters, and in the American Association of University Women. She also served on the Red Wing Heritage Preservation Commission and the Library Board. She was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church. In 2007 she became one of the first four women honored in a local program called "Athena's Legacy", a program developed by Anne Jones to honor women who serve as role models for others to follow.
She loved the Arts, attending many plays, concerts, and operas with the help of dear friends.
She is survived by two sons, Dr. Peter H. Ullrich of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Commander James M. Ullrich of Bremerton, Washington; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a niece, Pamela Kramer of Chicago. She is preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Elizabeth Albright of Ithaca, New York, and Jane Ferron of Red Wing. Catherine would want to thank her many friends and caregivers, especially Dr. Ralph Rayner and his large loving family.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2017 at First Presbyterian. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Goodhue County Historical Society or First Presbyterian Church.
