Clifford Peter Mattson

Clifford Peter Mattson, 84, of Red Wing, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014 at Deercrest in Red Wing. He was born on October 4, 1930 in Zumbrota, Minnesota to Peter and Henrietta (Luhmann) Mattson. He graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1948. He was united in marriage to Jeanette Severson in February 1951. For many years he worked as a counselor at the Minnesota Correctional Facility and also as an assistant at the Hiawatha Valley Vet Clinic. He and Jeanette also renovated and managed the Hiawatha Hall in Red Wing, a dormitory for students at the Red Wing Technical College. Jeanette died on October 2, 2007. He was a member of United Lutheran Church, Red Wing Elks BPOE #845 and the Frontenac Sportsman Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, and his family recalls how wonderful he was as a caregiver to his wife and grandchildren.
Survivors include his three children, Glenn of Red Wing, Yvonne (Jim) Black of Red Wing and Janine (Steve) Kokal of Rochester; seven grandchildren, Stacy Mattson, Julie Welt, Brian Black, Jessica Mattson, Kristie Kokal, Jeff Black and Joe Kokal; four great grandchildren; his siblings, Donald (Marlene) Mattson of Kenyon, Bernard (Donna) Mattson of Kenyon, Darlene (Don) Mueller of Dresser, Wis., Morris (Audrey) Mattson of Cannon Falls, Cherie Grunzke of Beaver Falls, Pa. and Alvin Luhmann of Lake City; sister-in-law Phyllis Mattson of Annandale and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Keith; one brother, Merle and brother-in-law, Jim Grunzke.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014 at United Lutheran Church with Reverend Karl Rydholm officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 pm. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson Mahn Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service.
