Cynthia Smith Rettler

January 2, 1956 — March 21, 2017

Cynthia "Cindy" Smith Rettler, professional name Cindy Smith, age 61, of Rochester, died Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at her home.
Cynthia Joy Ann Smith was born Jan. 2, 1956 in Rochester to Robert and Barbara (Aaby) Smith. She grew up in Rochester and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1974. Cindy received her BA and Masters Degree in Education and a Masters Degree in Counseling from Winona State University. Cindy began her career as a Special Education Teacher at John Adams Middle School, and later as a Counselor at Kellogg Middle School in Rochester. She received her PsyD in Psychology from the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology. As part of her doctoral work, she moved to Phoenix, Arizona and served her internship at Samaritan Hospitals. She so enjoyed her time there that she ultimately made Phoenix her second home. Cindy then worked as Psychologist in Rochester for more than 25 years, first with Associates in Psychiatry and Psychology and later opening her own private practice. Cindy appreciated her work as a Psychologist, enjoying her interaction with patients and treasured the opportunity to help people in need.
On June 4, 1988 she married David J. "Dave" Rettler in Rochester, he survives. Cindy enjoyed travelling, both with her husband and with her friends, and was able to see and experience much of the world. She was an active runner and hiker, both in the cold of a Rochester winter and the heat of an Arizona summer. She was an avid reader and a great caretaker to her pets. She enjoyed life and was known to her family as an "Instigator of Fun".
Survivors include her husband Dave, her sister Reeny (Kevin) Smith of Hayfield, MN; brothers Bernard Smith of Tampa, FL; Benjamin Smith of Rochester; and Theodore (Kim) Smith of Lake City, MN; six nieces; and three nephews. Her parents, and an infant sister and brother preceded her in death.

Friends may call from noon to 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and a reception will be held following the service. Private burial will be in Marion Cemetery, Marion, MN.
