Dale A. Weberg

December 17, 1949 — August 15, 2014

Dale Allen Weberg, 64, of Red Wing died of cancer peacefully at home on Friday, August 15, 2014. A generous man who served his family and his community, Dale was born on December 17, 1949, in Plum City, Wisconsin, to Henry and Helen (Schrader) Weberg. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1967. There he met Mary Jane Schlichting, to whom he soon became devoted and with whom he shared the rest of his life. Dale and Mary were married on June 24, 1972. Dale's devotion to Mary and their children defined him as a selfless family man. He worked to make a good life for his family and enjoyed telling the tales of his early jobs in the Green Giant cannery and in the Cootie factory. Dale graduated from St. Cloud State University and later earned his master's degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Dale began teaching mathematics and science at the age of 21 and was a committed educator for 34 years. He spent many years teaching math at Hastings Middle School, where he demonstrated his patience and sense of humor in not only teaching but also appreciating his students until his retirement in 2005.

After he retired, Dale embarked on a second career in antique furniture. With consummate skill and meticulous care, he restored fine furniture to its original glory. He took great pride in the gleam of a well-rubbed dining table. Dale and Mary shared an interest in historical furnishings and together undertook the complete restoration of their home, built in 1898. Dale possessed great talents and even greater willingness to work in wood, tile, and paint, which he expended in the service of his family and Habitat for Humanity.

Dale was a member of First Lutheran Church in Red Wing, and for 32 years he served on the Christian Action Committee there. He gave his time and energy to the Christmas Project, March Food Share, and many other service projects. He was a member of the Lions Club and enjoyed reaching out to students through the club's dictionary project. He worked in the background to accomplish great things.

Dale found peace in nature and loved fishing, both in trout streams and from his pontoon boat. He shared the experience of nature with his children through the family's travels around the United States and especially to the North Shore of Lake Superior. Dale and Mary continued to travel in their retirement, enjoying their winter trips to Florida, Missouri, and Virginia. He was always in the driver's seat, except perhaps for the stories he used to tell of a youthful hitchhike when he made it to the beach in Texas and slept under the stars.

Dale was a quietly caring man who nurtured his children with weeknight suppers of pigs-in-a-blanket and bedtime snacks of mystery applesauce. He was an enthusiastic supporter of his children's athletic and academic pursuits and especially loved to follow basketball. After their children left home, Mary adopted a cat, Nyssa, who then adopted Dale. Nyssa became Dale's loyal companion, snoozing buddy, and guardcat.

Dale is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary; his children, Kristina (Scott) Alton of Woodbury, Minn., and Matt (Amanda) Weberg of Grand Marais, Minn.; his grandson, Bern Alton; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews; and many friends and relatives. Dale was preceded in death by his parents.
