David T. Vine

July 15, 1929 — August 15, 2016

David T. "Dave" Vine, age 87, of Rochester passed away peacefully on Monday, August 15, 2016 at St. Mary's Hospital. Dave was born July 15, 1929 in Rochester, MN to Adelbert "Deb" and Helen (Toogood) Vine. He attended Rochester High School and was a star athlete in basketball, football, and baseball. He was class president in 1947 and graduated in 1948. He attended both Rochester Junior College and Colorado College. When the Korean War began, he joined the navy and served as a Corpsman. After he was discharged, he attended the University of Minnesota--Twin Cities. Upon the sudden death of his father in April 1956, he returned to Rochester and took over ownership and day to day operations of Vine Funeral Home. In June of 1956 he married Helen Jean Steele. The couple had two children, Randy, and Deborah Ann "Debbie". The marriage later ended in divorce. He married Mary Priebe, also from Rochester, in 1978. The couple had one child, Annie Ringo in 1980.
Dave was an avid outdoorsman, spending time duck hunting, deer hunting, and fishing with life long-friends. Along with his marriage to Mary came a love of horseback riding. They bought a small hobby farm on the outskirts of Rochester, the upkeep of which kept him busy and frustratingly happy long before and throughout his retirement. Dave loved all animals, especially his dogs and horses. He liked good steak dinners, a lot of butter on everything, and cigarettes. He was witty and funny--a tremendous flirt, but always a gentleman.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary, who cared for him lovingly at home through many years of chronic illness, his son Randy (Roanna) of Rochester; and his daughter Ringo (Madeline Kochen) of Long Beach, CA. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Marissa Vine, Ajay Vine, James Powers, and Chris Holly, and one great granddaughter. Dave was preceded in death by both of his parents, his sisters, Nancy Helen Vine, and Barbara Vine Lefkow, and his daughter Debbie. Dave also had many other young people who he considered his children. He is survived by many of them whom he loved deeply and who considered him their surrogate or stand-in father or grandfather. Dave counted many of his friends and neighbors as close as family. He is survived by many good and caring souls to whom he felt great affection and admiration. He (as well as his family) felt an enormous sense of gratitude towards Dr. Chistopher McLeod, who went above and beyond his Hippocratic obligations where Dave was concerned for years.
Dave served the community with kindness and compassion in his position as a funeral director for over 40 years. He was a long-time member of the Rochester Masonic Lodge #21 A.F. & A.M., and the Rochester Shrine Club. Memorials are suggested to the Shriner's Children's Hospitals.
Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel with a Remembrance Service at 7:00 p.m.
