With grace and dignity, Denise M. Alt, 59, a long-time resident of Red Wing, passed away peacefully after a year-long battle with cancer at Owatonna Homestead Hospice House on October 25, 2014.
Denise was born in Wisconsin Rapids WI May 31 1955, daughter of Vern Alt and Georgine Lang Alt. Moving to Owatonna, she attended St. Mary's School, graduating from Marian High School in 1973. She attended Bemidji State University, studying Vocal Music and Education and upon graduation in 1977 taught elementary school vocal music at St. Raphael's Catholic School Springfield, MN; Lonsdale-New Market-Veseli Area Catholic School Elko, MN; Red Wing Public School Red Wing, MN and St. Joseph's Catholic School in Red Wing where she was both music teacher and librarian.
She shared her talents working at a number of Red Wing businesses including Red Wing Book Company and First State Bank of Red Wing. She was involved with event planning and Public Relations at The Sheldon Theatre for the Performing Arts, and The Best of Times Bookstore and Café.
Denise's work experiences were an outlet for her greatest loves: that of music and performance, of reading and the intellectual and imaginative doors that opens, and of working with children, inspiring them through music and through books. She enjoyed doing craftwork and appreciated the creativity of artisans. A gentle and generous soul, she would passionately defend ideals she believed in. Denise was always a loyal friend and an avid supporter of the Minnesota Twins & Vikings (no matter what).
She is survived by her father Vern Alt of Elysian, MN and her three sisters, Marlene Alt of Minneapolis, Leanne T. Alt (Gary Johnson) of Owatonna, MN and Amy Alt Emm (Derek) of Birmingham England. She is survived by innumerable friends and their children and her Goddaughter Maggie Siepelmeyer, all of whom will remember her with love.
She is preceded in death by her much beloved mother Georgine Lang Alt and her grandparents Agnes and George Lang of Lake Crystal, MN and Clarence and Philomena Alt of Cuba City, WI.
Visitation will be at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 from 5 to 8 pm. The celebration of Denise's life will be at the Mahn Family Funeral Home on Thursday, October 30 at 10:30 am with a brief visitation an hour proceeding the service. A time of fellowship will follow the service. Interment will be at the Holy Family Cemetery, Lake Crystal MN.
