Donald Herbert Bruemmer, age 85, died Sunday, June 4, 2017, at St. Elizabeth's Health Care Center in Wabasha, MN. He was born March 1, 1932 in Lake Wilson, MN to Henry and Julia (Klingbile) Bruemmer. He moved to a farm west of Ruthton in the spring of 1936 and then to Holland, MN for a short time before returning to the farm west of Ruthton. He attended country school there, and later graduated from West Central School of Agriculture in 1949. During school, he enjoyed many sports. In 1949, he was the 128# wrestling champion, and in 1952 went to the state finals for the 132# Golden Glove. On June 8, 1952, he married Dolores R. Jurgens at the WELCA in Elkton, South Dakota. In September of 1952, he was drafted into the U. S. Army and served until his honorable discharge in September of 1954. He then returned to help on his family farm until 1957 when Don and his family moved to a farm by Clear Lake, SD. In 1959 they left the farm and moved to Flandreau, SD where Don worked for the Flandreau Co-op, where he worked in creamery, egg breaking and produce. In July of 1962 the family moved to St. Paul Park where he worked as a painter and construction worker. In 1963, they moved to Red Wing where he sold Fuller Brush until 1965. He then went to work for Bay State Milling where he was a miller. For health reasons, he left the mill in 1972 and went to work for Top Lumber, retiring in 1994. Don enjoyed softball, golf and bowling. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He belonged to the Red Wing Wildlife League, was President of Red Wing Square Dance Club in 1976 and also served 6 years on the council of St. John's Lutheran Church as well as serving on other boards and committees.
Don is survived by his wife, Dolores of Red Wing; four children, Dean (Sheila) of Winona, Dalyn of Red Wing, Lionel (Misty) of Aberdeen, SD and Dawn (Paul) Gielau of Red Wing; daughter-in-law, Jean (Ken) Bruemmer; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Catherine Wendt; brother, Paul; son, Larry and granddaughter, Delora-Ann.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at St. John's Lutheran Church with Rev. Peter Sternberg officiating. Visitation will be 4-7, Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery in Red Wing. Memorials are preferred to the church.
