Donald Curtis Florine, 90, of Red Wing, died peacefully Saturday, June 10, 2017, at St. Crispin Living Community, Seminary Home. He was born on August 18, 1926, in Carthage, South Dakota to Elmer and Esther (Magnuson) Florine. In 1941, he moved to Gaylord, Minnesota. In 1943, he enlisted in the US Navy serving in the South Pacific for two years during World War II. Following his discharge in 1945, he worked for Slowik Motors in Minneapolis until moving to Red Wing in 1947. On October 1, 1949, he married Dolores Sass at First Lutheran Church. He worked with his parents at the Red and White Store on Old West Main from 1947 to 1954. He then went to work for Murphy Feeds and National Tea Grocery until May 1955. He purchased Buchanan Grocery (Red Wing), which he owned and operated until 1991, when he sold it to his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Ann Florine. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, serving on the church council for many years, the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54, Burnson-Lillybald VFW Post#1218, National Exchange Club, the Senior Citizens Club where he served as president and the Red Wing Country Club. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii and Arizona, golfing, bowling and playing bridge. He enjoyed his retirement years with family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Donald is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Dolores; three children, Kevin (Ann) Florine of Red Wing; Grant (Ruby) Florine of Rochester and Carol (Tom) Juul of Evansville, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Nathan (Laura) Florine, Ted (Kelly) Florine, Emily (Britt) Block, Lori (Taylor) Schepp, Donald (fiancé, Shelby Wagner) Juul, Billie Juul and Robert Juul; five great grandchildren, Greyson, Brecken, Kaia and Brielle Florine and Evelyn Block; one brother, LeRoy "Bud" Florine of Mountain Lake; one sister, Marianne (Glenn) Anderson of Houlton, Wis., and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clare Florine and one sister, Elaine Lindsay.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 15, 2017, at First Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Reverend Arthur Sharot officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. legion prayer service on Wednesday, June 14, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church or Mayo Red Wing Hospice.
