Doris Margaret Knecht

Doris Margaret (Hayenga) Knecht, 94, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2018 at Madonna Towers in Rochester, MN.
Doris was born August 15, 1923 on a farm northeast of Bancroft, South Dakota in Kingsbury County, to Roland and Mary (Poage) Hayenga. In 1929, her family moved to a farm north of Nisland, in Butte County, SD then to Rapid City, SD in 1932. Doris attended grade school at Upper Rapid School and graduated Class Valedictorian from Rapid City High School in 1940. After high school, she attended and graduated, in 1942, from Cottey Junior College in Nevada, Missouri.
On June 14, 1946, Doris was united in marriage to John Robert Knecht at the First Congregational Church in Ames, IA. Their marriage was blessed with three children; David, Barbara Jo and Mark.
Doris was hired as a secretary to the president of Cottey College from 1942-1943. From 1943-1944 she was employed by the Black Hills General Hospital. In 1944, she was a secretary to Martin Beckers, Equitable Life of New York. Doris was then hired as a secretary in the Department of Architectural Engineering at Iowa State College and then as secretary to the President of Iowa State College from 1945 to 1947. She was also an administrative assistant at the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology from 1965-1970.
Doris is survived by her husband of 71 years, John Robert Knecht and her son David and daughter-in-law Judy. At the time of her death, she had 5 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Mark and daughter Barbara.
