Douglas Warren Borgen

June 26, 1932 — November 19, 2014

Douglas W. Borgen of Red Wing, formerly of Superior, Wis., left on his Viking journey, November 19, 2014. Although he claimed 65 years was going to be his limit, he stayed with us much longer, living to 80. A man who would strike up a conversation with anyone, he probably just had too much to share for only 65 years.
Born into the Norwegian tradition of big water sailing on June 26, 1934 to Captain C. Henry and Ada Borgen , Doug followed in the footsteps of his father for some time. Sailing with the Wilson Marine Transit Company, the Great Lakes brought him closer to his father and grandfather. But it took him farther away from the only thing that could pull him away - his wife Jan. So it went one day that he left his ore boat docked in Detroit, jumped on a train and reunited with his bride at the Milwaukee Road train depot, leaving all of his worldly possessions on the boat! They never left each other's side for fifty-five years.
Doug had a way to make everyone feel special. His devotion to his family is best illustrated by his correspondence to his son, Steven. He started writing to his son daily in 1982 and didn't stop for the next 30 years. Doug leaves behind a Super Bowl-winless Minnesota Vikings, countless trout and walleye left uncaught in northern Minnesota waters and acres of sod where a golf club divot should reside. Mostly, Doug leaves behind an army of family and friends who each have a story to tell of how he made them feel special and loved.
He is survived by his loving wife Jan; five sons, David (Linda) of Apple Valley, Alan (Jean ) of Lindstrom, Charles (Kathy ) of Clear Lake, Steven of Columbia, S.C. and Timothy (Sandra) of Red Wing; seven granddaughters; one grandson; two great granddaughters; one great grandson; sister, Carol Johnson of Duluth and many nieces and nephews.
Doug is preceded on his journey by his parents, Captain and Mrs. C. Henry Borgen, his brother Byron, beloved in-laws Herbert and Sigrid Anderson, and many friends who can't wait to hear his stories of a life well experienced.
