Erna M. Borgschatz

April 30, 1919 — April 20, 2014

Erna Mary (Hamm) Borgschatz, age 94, of Pine Island, passed away on April 20, 2014 at the Pine Haven Care Center where she had been a resident since October 2010. The funeral service will be on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Pine Island with Pastor Kip Groettum officiating. Burial will be in Zumbrota Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Erna Mary Barchent was born on April 30, 1919, to Herman and Mary (nee Meyer) Barchent in Fillmore County, Wykoff, MN. She married Rudolph Hamm on October 30, 1937 in Wykoff. The couple farmed various farms in Fillmore, Olmsted and Goodhue Counties. Rudy passed away February 2, 1962. Erna married Ed Borgschatz in Pine Island, MN on December 19, 1970, where they resided until the time of his death on June 13, 1995.
Erna was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church and WELCA. She was a longstanding member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Pine Island as well as a member of the Pine Island Senior Citizens Group. Her interests included quilting, especially making quilts tops for charity, playing cards and collecting bird figurines.
Erna is survived by sons, Jerry (Karen) Hamm of Chatfield, Albert (Charlotte) Hamm of Orlando, FL, and Phillip (Sandy) Hamm of Muskego, WI; daughters, Violet (William) Hostetler and Rose Barry of Rochester, Lily (James) Walsh of Plainview and Nancy (Dean) Streiff of Twin Valley, MN. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren; one step grandchild; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are stepchildren, Marge (Rod) Welch of Chatfield, Verona (Clifford) Prigge of Rochester, Linda (Earl) LaVan of Hartley, IA and Bernard (Rose) Borgschatz of Byron, as well as many step-grandchildren, step great-grandchildren and step great-great-grandchildren.
Along with her husbands she was preceded in death by an infant son; son, James Hamm; grandsons, Roger Hamm, Ronald Hamm and Blaine Gullickson; one step-son, Raymond Borgschatz; one step-daughter, Virginia Herrick; one step great-grandson; and sisters, Mildred Johnson and Frances Freimark.
Memorials are suggested to St. Croix Hospice
