Gerald E Childs

December 19, 1932 — February 11, 2016

Gerald "Jerry" E. Childs, 83, of Red Wing, passed away on February 11, 2016 at Deer Crest. Jerry is survived by his beloved and loving wife and best friend, Yvonne of 55 years; his two daughters Martha Olzenak of Burnsville, MN and Mary (Randy) Manore of Lakeville, MN. He is also survived by nieces, a nephew, and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Ervin and Luella.

He was born in Mankato, MN, where he grew up and graduated from Mankato High School where he played tennis and also served as manager of the football team. He graduated from Mankato State University with a degree in education. He later received his Masters in Guidance Counseling from Colorado State University, Ft. Collins, CO. He began his 34 year teaching career in the Zumbrota School District as an English and Social Studies teacher from 1955-1963. He also served as the advisor for the yearbook, school newspaper and drama team. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958. He met the love of his life, Yvonne, and they married on June 12, 1960. In 1963, he moved to Red Wing to teach 9th grade English in the Red Wing School District. He spent his remaining 28 years with the school district as a Guidance Counselor retiring in 1991. He was voted by his peers and awarded outstanding guidance counselor of Southeastern Minnesota. For over 20 years, he also devoted his time coaching the high school boys and girls tennis teams.

Jerry will be remembered for how well he loved--his welcoming, cheerful, kind hearted, humble nature and his infectious laugh and smile. He was a wonderful and adoring husband and father. We miss his warm presence, smile, and the twinkle in his eye before he made a quick witted remark or joke. There was nothing more important to him than his wife, Yvonne and his "girls". He was a dedicated teacher and coach wanting his students to achieve their greatest potential. He loved spending time with his family, dining out, playing board games, being outdoors, listening to the Twins sitting on the porch, and traveling. Throughout his life, he found great joy in planning elaborate vacations. In his retirement, he especially enjoyed "wintering" in Ft. Myers Beach, FL and traveling throughout the US and Canada with his wife, Yvonne. He traveled all 50 states. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he had served as a youth leader and Sunday school treasurer.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church in Red Wing with Reverend Greg Strunk officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. His final resting place will be at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the church or Alzheimer's Association.
