Gloria Lemmon McKenzie, age 89, of Red Wing, passed away Thursday, December 18th at St. Brigid's Health at Hi Park in Red Wing.
She was born in Minneapolis on July 23, 1925 to Robert and Shirley (Dieter) Lemmon. She graduated from Murray High School in St. Paul in 1943, where she met and attended two proms with her future husband, Bruce McKenzie. After three years of a war-time courtship, and scores of love letters crossing the Pacific Ocean, Bruce and Gloria were married on February 20, 1947.
Marriage, college, jobs, and additional Navy service took the couple to Missouri, San Diego, North Dakota and, eventually, Red Wing. In the meantime they had three children and bought their one and only home where they resided for 59 years on Rose Avenue.
For over 20 years she worked as a secretary in the Red Wing Public School system serving at Colvill, Washington, Hancock and Twin Bluff Junior High schools before retiring in 1987.
Having spent her childhood moving from one rental to another during the depression, owning her own home was something that never grew old for Gloria. She loved to garden, paint, read, travel and spend time with her life-long friends. Baking Christmas cookies with her chums, attending the weekly lunch-bunch meals, sewing, attending book clubs, singing in the church choir, and volunteering filled her retirement. She was glad to have traveled to 48 states, England, and Scotland.
Gloria is survived by her husband Bruce of Red Wing, son Stephen (Patricia) of Plymouth, daughters, Kathleen (Craig) Schrom of Omaha, and Leslie (Roy) Hakala of Red Wing, six grandchildren, and six great-grand children. She was preceded in death by both of her parents and her brother, Warren Lemmon.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, chapter P of P.E.O., and Women's Study Club.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park Chapel with Reverend Greg Strunk officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 until time of the service.
