Gretta Margaret Buller

A memorial service for Gretta Buller will be held Sunday July 27th at 3:00 PM at Christ United Methodist Church in Rochester. The Reverend Nancy Wheeler Handlon and the Reverend Elizabeth Macauley will co-officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Burial of Mrs. Buller's urn will occur at a later date at Salem Cemetery near Paynesville, Minnesota. Mrs. Buller, 81, of Rochester, died Wednesday July 16, 2014 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester.
Gretta Margaret Lawson, born September 28, 1932 in Walhalla, North Dakota, the daughter of Harrison and Alice Lawson, was a graduate of Langdon (North Dakota) High School. She attended the Bismarck School of Nursing (recently part of NDSU) and was graduated as a registered nurse. She also attended Westmar College, staffed the College Health Service, received a BA, and was Homecoming Queen. She endeavored in mission service at hospitals in Espanola, New Mexico and Red Bird Mission in Beverly, Kentucky. She married Bruce Buller on August 21, 1957 in Langdon, North Dakota. Her career in nursing continued as a night supervisor nurse and in the trauma unit in Naperville, Illinois, Director of Nursing at the St. Charles Hospital in Aurora, Illinois, the New Teaching Unit at Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, and at Health Service at Concordia College in St. Paul she began the Health and Wellness Center of Hamline University for the college community. She was a recipient of the Dr. Gail Proffitt Award from the North Central College Health Association; published "Healthy Hints" and circulated it nationally. At the trial of Dennis Banks and Russell Means she started the Emergency Clinic service for Native Americans, and smoked a peace pipe with Native American leadership and William Kunstler. At the Mayo Clinic and St. Marys Hospital she worked in Surgical Nurse Communications and in Research Services, and was the recipient of the Kairos Award. She retired in 1998.
She is survived by her husband, Bruce Buller, of Rochester; a daughter Rebecca Marie Buller and her husband Jonathan Melena of St. Paul, and their daughters Katy (Sam) Larson and Hannah; a son Christopher Warren Buller and his wife Meg of Richmond, Oregon, and their sons Harrison and Garan. Also surviving are three sisters, Joyce, Ida, and Muriel. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and two brothers.
If so desired, memorials may be directed to Seasons Hospice or to the Poverello Fund in care of Mayo Clinic.
