Inez Marie Malmgren, 93, of Red Wing passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2017 under Hospice care. Inez was born on December 10, 1923 to Irvin and Chloe Jane (Allyn) Hand in Buchanan County, IA. She lived most of her life in Winthrop and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1941. She went on to attend Cedar Rapids Business College and graduated from there in 1943. She married Harry Malmgren on June 9, 1946 and worked with him as a partner in the Service Center appliance store in Winthrop, The Service Center, and the Magic Thimble fabric store in Independence, IA. She also worked at the Backbone State Park as a secretary for four years. When they weren't minding the store, they enjoyed many camping trips with friends and family.
Membership in service organizations was very important to Inez. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star for 75 years, American Legion Auxiliary for 73 years, and the Evening Star Quilt Guild for 7 years. Inez's passion was sewing. Throughout her lifetime she made many items that were donated to Hospice, American Cancer Society, hospital organizations, missions and churches.
Inez was preceded in death by her husband Harry Malmgren and her parents, Irvin and Chloe Hand. She is survived by her sister Evelyn Carle of Freemont, NE; daughters Cheryl Gouldin of Firth, NE and Mary Ellen (Scott) Halverson of Red Wing; five grandchildren Shawn (Marie) Gouldin of Firth, NE, Heather (Bill) Baumgartner of Centennial, CO, Heidi (Jeff) Bedier of Bondurant, IA, Holly (Adam) Espenhover of Carroll, IA, and Rachel (Jason) Siegel of Fulton, MO; step granddaughters Brianna Halverson and Meagan Halverson of St. Paul; ten great grandchildren; and niece Rhonda (Steve) Sell of Freemont, NE.
Memorial service will be on Monday, September 25, 2017 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Heidi Bolt officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Winthrop, Iowa on September 26 at 10AM at the Fairview Cemetery. Memorials are requested to Journey of Hope in care of Steve Johnson to further his global work for women and children.
