John August Betcher

The funeral service for John Betcher will be held Tuesday February 3rd at 11:00 AM at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Goodhue, with The Reverend Justin Gosch presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Betcher, 50, of Mazeppa, died Wednesday January 28, 2015 following a motor vehicle accident in Goodhue County.
John August Betcher was born September 29, 1964 at Saint John's Hospital in Red Wing. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he has been a lifetime member. He attended school in Zumbrota, and was a graduate with the Class of 1982. He continued his education at RCTC, and went to work for Sommerfield Construction. He worked at Zumbrota Sales Barn and Schwann's along with farming since the age of fifteen. He currently worked for the postal service as a letter carrier in the communities of Akeley and Nevis, Minnesota. He had previously worked in the Pine Island Post Office.
On August 25, 1990 he married Julie Marie Liebenow at Peace United Church of Christ in Rochester. The couple divorced in 2006. John loved his family very much. He also loved his cows, dogs, and other animals. Some of his favorite hobbies included fishing, hunting, and playing cards. He always dreamed of having a cabin in the woods where he could do anything he wanted.
John is survived by his parents, John E. and Adeline Betcher of Mazeppa; sons, Craig August Betcher of Caledonia, and Blake John Paul Betcher of Winona; a daughter, Macey Marie Betcher of Plainview; siblings, Jim Betcher, Lori and Mark Holland, and Josh and Sara Betcher.
Also surviving are his former wife, Julie Liebenow of Plainview; in-laws, Pam and Dan Kitzman, Tim and Gloria Liebenow, Scott and Amy Bethke, and Chad and Ann Liebenow; nieces and nephews, Jason, Andrew, Kelli, Haley, and Brooke Betcher, Jared, Justin, and Jenna Liebenow, and Amanda Bethke; along with the entire multitude of friends that have known John throughout his many years.
He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Evelyn and Lauren Betcher; maternal grandparents, Malinda "Lorraine" and Emil Sommerfield; and his former father-in-law, Paul Liebenow.
A visitation will be held Monday February 2nd from 5:00 to 7:30 PM at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Larson Chapel, in Zumbrota. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to a charity of the donor's choosing.
