John Robert Halpaus

John Robert Halpaus, 70, of Red Wing, died unexpectedly on Saturday, November 15, 2014, at his home. He was born on November 29, 1943, in Lake City, Minnesota, son of John Elmer and Luella Marian (Rolandt) Halpaus. He grew up and attended school in Lake City. After high school, he attended Southeast Technical College in Red Wing, where he earned an associates' degree in fashion merchandising. John served in the army during the Vietnam War until he was honorably discharged in 1963. In 1980, he married Patricia Ann (Folkman) Groat. John spent a number of years working for J. C. Penney, Jorgenson Chevrolet and lastly, Treasure Island Casino. John was a member of the Church of St. Joseph. He and Patricia ran an Alaskan Malamute dog kennel, where they bred and showed dogs for 23 years. In his spare time, John enjoyed gardening, and more recently woodworking and painting. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

John is survived by his wife, Patricia; step-children, Leana (Bill) Zimmermann and Scott Groat, both of Red Wing; one daughter, Tammy (Troy) Shell of Lake City; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two great grandsons; two step great-grandchildren and one on the way; and his aunt, Betty Slauson of Lake City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two uncles, David Rolandt and Harley Anderson.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Military honors will be performed by Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54. A private burial will be at Lakewood Cemetery in Lake City.
