John "Smoky" Shelstad

John J. "Smoky" Shelstad age 76 of Wanamingo passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2014 at Mayo Health Systems - St. Marys Campus in Rochester. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo with Pastor Chris Culuris officiating. Inurnment will be in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 28, 2014 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.
John Joyce Shelstad was born on October 10, 1938 in Red Wing, MN to Joyce and Estella (nee Gombert) Shelstad. He grew up in Goodhue and graduated from Goodhue High School in 1956. He worked for the Sleepy Eye Telephone Company in Goodhue. In 1957 Smoky started working at IBM in Rochester. On September 15, 1962 he married Mary J. Syverson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo. They made their home in Wanamingo and Smoky worked for IBM for thirty five years, retiring in 1992. Smoky volunteered with the Wanamingo Fire Department for thirty eight years, serving as secretary and chief. While serving as chief, the First Responders were started. Smoky was also a member of the Wanamingo Sportsman Club, had served on the Wanamingo City Council for 13 years, owned his own stump grinding business for 15 years, was an avid pool player and played in leagues for many years and was currently serving his second term on the property committee at Trinity Lutheran Church and was a longtime usher. Smoky also enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, hunting, playing cribbage, watching Twins and Vikings games, helping on his son-in-laws farm and meeting his friends in downtown Wanamingo at 5:00 PM.
John is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters, Tracy (Steve) Boyum of Wanamingo and Lisa Shelstad of Ely, IA; his Two Precious Joys-granddaughters, Kristin Boyum and Kari Boyum; brothers, Terry (Marlene) Shelstad of Red Wing and Bill Shelstad of Goodhue and sister, Genevieve "Punky" Robbins of Rochester and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Joyce and Estella.
Memorials are preferred to the Wanamingo Fire Department or Trinity Lutheran Church.
