LaVonne Marie Brodd-Nelson

LaVonne Marie Brodd-Nelson, 78, of Almena, Wisc., formerly of Red Wing, died July 10, 2014 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Barron, Wisc. She was born October 17, 1935 in Vasa Township to Milton and Mildred (Lorenson) Larson. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in Red Wing, graduating from Red Wing Central High School. She married Gene S. Brodd on January 5, 1954. As a military wife she lived in many places, including, Germany, Taiwan, Florida, Mississippi, Texas and Minnesota. They later divorced. She loved working with children and spent many years at VASA Children's Home where she loved her kids, often taking them home for visits. On August 13, 1994, she married Scott C. Nelson. Together they enjoyed the outdoors, four wheeling, snowmobiling and canoeing. They bought a hobby farm together in Almena and raised goats and chickens. She also enjoyed feeding the birds and working in her garden. She was a member of the VFW Auxillary in Almena.

Vonnie lived for 10 years with Alzheimer's disease and was cared for by her husband Scott until she moved to Dallas Care and Rehab, Country Gardens Memory Care. She always looked forward to Scott's daily visits. She will be remembered for her artistic ability, her love of music and for her creative mind.

She is survived by husband, Scott; three daughters, Laura (Lester) Doerr of Hager City, WI, Jo-Ann Anderson of Red Wing, MN, and Kim Brodd of San Antonio, TX; four step-sons, Chris Nelson of Apple Valley, MN, Mike Nelson of Almena, WI, Tony (Jennifer) Nelson of Farmington, MN, and Chet (Tara) Nelson of Ottawa, KS; three grandchildren, Ingemar Anderson, Sara (Curtis) Doerr-Schutz, Ethan Anderson and his fiancé, Sara McFarland; two great grandchildren, Faith and Eli Schutz; five step grandchildren; two brothers, Donald (Algene) and Roger (Lori) Larson; one sister, Maxine (Leo) Ryan.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Lowell and Douglas

A funeral service will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Pastor Kristi Mitchell officiating. Burial will be at Vasa Lutheran Cemetery. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
