Lawrence Joseph VanHavermaet

ROCHESTER - Lawrence "Larry" VanHavermaet, age 92, of Rochester, died Thursday, Mar. 26, 2015 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Mary's Campus.
Lawrence Joseph VanHavermaet was born Aug. 29, 1922 in Kent, MN, the second child of Bernard and Susanna (May) VanHavermaet. He grew up on farms near Sauk Centre, MN. Larry served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1941 to 1942, working in three different camps in Minnesota. On June 2, 1952 he married Lorraine Spaeth at the St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Melrose, MN and they had one son, Charles. The couple made their home in Melrose. Larry worked for Kraft Foods in Melrose from 1948 until his retirement in 1984 as a cheese maker. The couple were members of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose. They moved to Rochester in 2005 to be near their son.
Larry's passion was helping people. He enjoyed wood working and used his skill to benefit others. He was a member of the Church of St. Pius X, the Knights of Columbus - Rochester, and a 4th. Degree member of the Bishop Edward A. Fitzgerald Assembly #548. He was a member of the Mechanical History Round Table and helped with the "Days of Yesteryear" at the Olmsted County Historical Center. His life was one of service, and he will be truly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine, his son, Charles (Barbara) of Rochester; three grandsons, Benjamin, Daniel, and Samuel; three sisters, Mabel Rousselange, and Regina Coan, both of Clearwater, MN; and Cecelia Bieringer of Long Prairie, MN; his brother, Francis (Sonja) of St. Francis, MN; and his sister-in-law, Maggie VanHavermaet of Sauk Centre, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and two brothers.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 16 at Saint Mary's Cemetery in Melrose, MN. Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army or the American Red Cross.
