Leonard Burton Hartwich

March 15, 1929 — August 13, 2017

Leonard "Burt" Hartwich, age 88, of Rochester, died Sunday Aug. 13, 2017 at Cottagewood Senior Communities in Rochester. Leonard Burton Hartwich was born Mar. 15, 1929 in Colorado Springs, CO where he was raised. He completed two years at Denver University studying Architecture before joining the US Army National Guard. He served two years in Korea during the Korean War building air strips. On Feb. 27, 1953 he married Janice Schroeder in Colorado Springs, she survives. Burt then graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a degree in Architectural Engineering. The couple then moved to Omaha, NE where he worked for an Architectural Firm, then moving to Decorah, IA where he was also employed by Architectural Firm. The couple then moved to Iowa City, IA where he was employed for Shive, Hall, & Hattery Architects and Engineers, where he had an interest in the business. They then moved to Iowa Falls, IA where he worked for Jim Bemler Pre-Stressed Concrete as a Structural Engineer. Burt served as the President of the Iowa Engineering Society in 1992-1993. He designed and built several buildings on the Luther College Campus in Decorah. He retired in 2001 and the couple moved to Rochester in 2003. They spent winters in McAllen, TX. Burt was a member of Homestead United Methodist Church and the Korean War Veterans Club. He enjoyed painting, drawing, fishing, and camping.

Survivors include his wife, two Aunts in Colorado, and cousins living on the east and west coasts, and in Colorado.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday Aug. 27, 2017 at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel with Rev. Luke Nelson of Homestead United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Chatfield Cemetery at a later date.

Friends may call one hour before the service, and a reception will be held following the service.
