Lester Walter Haaker

Lester Walter Haaker, Jr., of Red Wing, died Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Arbor Lane in Burnsville. He was born October 24, 1923, in Chicago Ill. to Lester and Lilliah (Tess) Haaker. He attended Lane Technical High School. Prior to graduating, he worked in a precision optical shop in Chicago. In 1941, he moved to Minneapolis and helped set up an optical shop at Mpls Honeywell. He entered the U. S. Army on April 3, 1943, serving in the European Theater with 104th Infantry Division as a combat medic. He was honorably discharged in March of 1946. On June 25, 1949, he married Margaret "Marge" Wisnewski at St. Mathias Catholic Church in Chicago. Between 1946 and 1955 he attended Illinois Institute of Technology in the evenings and worked full time at Argonne National Laboratory. He earned a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering in 1955. In 1959, he move to Red Wing and worked at Central Research Laboratories Inc. designing and marketing remote handling equipment. He made a major contribution to the success of Central Research and retired in 1985. He was a member of the Church of St. Joseph where he ushered for 30 years; Knights of Columbus, Council 1223, the Leo C. Peterson American Legion, Post #54, VFW Post 1218 and the BPO Elks # 548.

He is survived by one son, Kevin of Savage, Minn.; former daughter-in-law, Rosemary Haaker of Burnsville; three grandchildren, Joseph Haaker of Red Wing, Emily Haaker of Sleepy Eye and Lucas Haaker of Hill AFB, Utah; and a brother, Edward of Schaumburg, IL.

He is preceded in death his wife, Marge; parents; and 2 brothers, Harlan and Charles.

A Mass of Resurrection will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 24, 2017, at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Thomas M. Kommers presiding. Burial will be at a later date at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. On-line condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
