Lew Fiero,

Lew Fiero, Jr., 97, of Red Wing, passed away peacefully, Sunday, July 16, 2017 at the Bluffs in Lake City.

He was born October 26, 1919 to Lew Elton, Sr. and Marguerite (Calkins) Fiero in St. Paul, Minn., the first of three sons. He graduated from Baudette High School in 1938 and attended Hamline University and the University of Minnesota, graduating with a BA in journalism in 1943. While in college he met his future wife, the former Mabel Murray of Augusta, Georgia, who was also a student at the U of M.

After graduating from college Lew enlisted in the Marines, completed boot camp at Parris Island, S.C., and earned his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 41st class of the Marine Officer Candidate School at Quantico, Va., in 1943. When Mabel graduated from the U of M, she accepted a commission as an Ensign in the Navy WAVEs at the Norfolk Naval Station, Va. The couple married in Washington, DC om December 4, 1943.

During World War II, Lew served as a ground officer with Marine Corps Aviation units at Cherry Point, N.C., and El Toro Naval Station, Calif. He then deployed with the 4th Marine Air Wing to the Marshall Islands, Guam, and Okinawa until the end of the war. He subsequently served 21 years in the USMC Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1960.

After leaving active military service Lew settled with his wife and baby daughter in St. Paul and worked in the advertising department of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. His career in print media advertising and graphic arts eventually took Lew and his growing family to Decatur, Ga., Jacksonville, Fla., New Orleans, La. Nashville, Tenn., Fairmont, Minn., Redwood Falls, Minn., and Red Wing. Lew and Mabel then embarked upon successful real estate careers in Red Wing until they retired in 1988

Lew and Mabel were long-time active members of First United Methodist and First Covenant Church, where Lew sang in the church choirs. Lew was also active in the Marine Corps League Toys for Tots, VFW, American Legion, Kiwanis, and he was a founding member of the Red Wing Toastmasters Club. His other interests included golf, oil and water color painting, cartoon drawing, fishing, camping and canoeing.

Lew is survived by his three children; Marguerite (John) Rietz of Blaine, Wash., Cheryl (Chuck) Hanson of La Crosse, Wis., and Bruce Fiero of Phoenix, Ore.; one brother, Charles Fiero of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada and by 1968 foreign exchange student Chartchai Lertsachanant of Bangkok, Thailand. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by Mabel, his wife of 62 years, who passed away in 2005; one brother, Richard and his parents.

The family would like to acknowledge caregivers, Anna Stills and Connie Halvorsen for their longtime service to the family in caring for both Mabel and Lew; the Downtown Plaza for providing a supportive home for Lew in his later years; the staff at the Bluffs in Lake City for their attentive care and finally, St. Croix Hospice for aiding Lew in his peaceful passing.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday July 22, 2017 at the First Covenant Church in Red Wing with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial, with will military honors, will be at Oakwood. Memorials are preferred to Freedom Honor Flight: https://www.freedomhonorflight.org/donate/

From Minneapolis/St. Paul Hwy 61 West into Red Wing.

Take a right at Bench Street (3rd stop light). Continue to County 66 or Pioneer Road. Take left on Pioneer Road and continue to Hay Creek Trail (about 1 mile). (Construction signs will be posted, but continue until you have to take a right at the construction site.) Take right and go ¼ mile and the church will be on your right.

From Wisconsin (63) and Lake City (61)

At the stop light (3rd and Plum, from Wisconsin, Hwy 63 or Main and Plum from Lake City, Hwy 61), take left onto Plum Street (Hwy 58) Continue for approximately two miles to Pioneer Road. Take right on Pioneer Road and continue to Hallquist Ave (about ¼ mile), take left. Continue on Hallquist Ave to second stop sign and take right on South Oak Dr . Continue for a 1/2 mile and you will come to the church.

From Rochester (Hwy 58)

At stop light, take a left onto Pioneer Road. Continue to Hallquist Ave (about ¼ mile). Take left on Hallquist Ave and at the second stop sign, take a right onto South Oak Dr. Continue for about a ½ mile and you will come to the church.
