Lois K. Zemke

October 19, 1932 — February 9, 2016

Lois K. Zemke, age 83 of Zumbrota died peacefully on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester. The funeral will be on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Grace Lutheran Church in rural Goodhue with Pastor Jim Bourman officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2016 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Sunday one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Lois Kathryn Reese was born on October 19, 1932 in Red Wing, MN to George and Alvina (Diercks) Reese. She grew up in rural Goodhue, attended St. John's Parochial School and graduated from Goodhue High School in 1949. Lois attended Rochester Junior College for one year. On June 23, 1951 she married Arleigh A. Zemke at St. John's Lutheran Church in Goodhue. They lived with Arleigh's parents before Arleigh entered the U.S. Army. They lived in Kansas and North Carolina while Arleigh was in the military and in 1955 they returned to the Goodhue area. Lois worked for Dr. James Halvorson and Dr. James De Geest, both who practiced in Goodhue. Lois also had several part time jobs and retired from the Zumbrota Hospital after over 35 years of employment. Lois was a member of Grace Lutheran Church since 1951, where she sang in the church choir, held offices in the Ladies Aid. She also belonged to the Farm Bureau and homemakers club. She volunteered at the Wise Penny Store in Red Wing, where she also held several offices, Goodhue Historical Society, and at many county hazardous waste collections. Lois enjoyed music, dancing, bowling in past years, family activities, gardening and baking pies. Lois loved her children, in-law children and all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially all the hugs. Lois loved being a farm wife and helpmeet.
Lois is survived by two daughters, Wanda (Alan) Hadler of Zumbrota and Mary (Kevin) Smith of Zumbrota; two sons, James (Deborah) Zemke of Wanamingo and David (Julie) Zemke of Rochester; 18 grandchildren, Jeremy Hadler, Michelle (Josh) Janovitz, Joel (Amanda) Hadler, Cindy (Pastor Nathan) Wilke, Rebecca (Geoff) Stetzer, Ross Hadler, Nathan (Jenny) Smith, Matthew (Kristi) Smith, Andrea Smith, Michael (Tammy) Smith, Jordan (Fiancée, Brittany Fields) Smith, Joanna Smith, Ryan (Marcella) Zemke, Amanda (Leroy Newell) Zemke, Brandon (Alydia) Zemke, Adam Zemke, Jessica (Fiancé, Shawn Meyers) Zemke and Jackie (Fiancé, John Riddell) Zemke, 23 great-grandchildren, sister, Miriam (Willis) Hinrichs of Goodhue; brother, Richard Reese of Red Wing, and special friend, Ralph McNamara of Zumbrota.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Arleigh, parents, George and Alvina, brother, Wilbert Reese and sisters-in-law, Leora Reese and Eunice Reese.
Memorials are preferred to Lutheran Chapel of the Air, Leukemia Society, Cancer Society, Parkinson's Disease or Grace Lutheran Church.
