Lyle Howard Chapin

Lyle Howard Chapin, age 82, of Merrifield., MN passed away March 18, 2015 at St. Mary's Hospital-Mayo System in Rochester, MN.
Lyle Howard Chapin was born in Richville, Minnesota on November 1, 1932 to Charles and Gladys (Whitney) Chapin. He grew up on a farm with his brother Ray and two sisters, Dona and Karen. He graduated from Perham High School in 1950 at the age of 17. He joined the US Air Force in January 1951 and served in the Korean Conflict as a Crypto Code Clerk. He was a Staff Sergeant when discharged. He then worked as a machinist for Caterpillar in Peoria, IL. He moved back to Minnesota and married Barbara Jeanne McComas Murphy on September 13, 1958 in Cohasset, MN. He became a Christian and was baptized on December 14, 1958. Lyle and Barbara lived in Brainerd, MN for 14 years while Lyle worked for Myers Cleaners. They moved to Lake City, MN where he worked for the Lake City Hospital as Supervisor of Building and Grounds for 22 years. He also painted many houses in the Lake City area. After he retired, they lived and worked at the Harborside Condos in Lake City. They later moved to Merrifield, MN to spend summers at their cabin and winters with their family. Lyle was a member of Hope Summit Christian Church in Rochester, MN. In later years he attended First Covenant Church in Red Wing and Ossipee Community Church in the summer, while at the lake. He is a member of the American Legion, Royal Neighbors, was a Cub Scout leader and taught Sunday School. His hobbies and interests included Lake City Wrestling, MN Vikings, chess, card games, Men's Weekend at the cabin, making and fixing things in his "messy" garage.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years; Barbara of Merrifield, MN, four children and their spouses; Jodie (Randy) Schultz of Red Wing, Kim (Mark) Evers of Oronoco, Dawn Pepper of Plymouth and Lance (Heidi) Chapin of Red Wing. He is also survived by extended family; Jeff (Jessica) Morgan of Maplewood, MN. He has 12 beloved grandchildren; Danielle (Thad), Nikoli (Lisa), Jamie, Zachary, Mitchell, Miranda, Rachel, Brianna, Kennedy, Kristin, Carter and Jacob, 2 great-granddaughters; Katelyn and Alexis. He is further survived by his two sisters; Dona (Paul) Levin and Karen (Jim) Wells, all of Richville, MN, sisters-in-law; Marge, Maureen (Ira), Shelley (Bob), Sheila (Myron) and brothers-in-law; Richard, Bruce (Vergie), Greg (Lisa), many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ray.
Lyle had a full and active life, but lived with heart failure for the last 15 years. "Life brings us tears, smiles and memories-The tears dry, the smiles fade but the memories last forever."
The Memorial Service for Lyle will be held at the Ossipee Community Church at 12799 County Road 109 (on the corner of Hwy 3) in Merrifield, MN on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Friends will gather one hour prior to services at the church. A luncheon will follow the service. Committal with honor guard services will take place at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, MN on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.
