Marie Elizabeth Cordes

Marie Elizabeth Cordes, 95, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at the Minnesota Masonic Home of Bloomington. She was born June 5, 1919 in White Rock, to Fred and Lottie (Swanson) Peterson. She attended country schools and graduated as Salutatorian in 1936 from Cannon Falls High School. On March 20, 1940, she was united in marriage to Leslie Cordes at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa and they made their home in Red Wing. Marie was an excellent homemaker and kept herself busy tending to her home, her children, and her garden, as well as baking, cooking and sewing. After Leslie died in 1988, she babysat for several families in Red Wing and had been hailed as an honorary grandma by many. Although Marie suffered devastating losses during her lifetime, she remained optimistic and true to her God-her faith was a great part of her life and comfort.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Charlotte Bishop of Chicago, Ill, and Joyce Rotell of Plymouth; 4 grandchildren, Brian (Chrissy)Bishop, Michael (Jessica) Bishop and Debbie Bishop and Christopher (Michelle) Rotell; 1 great-grandson, Aiden; 2 brothers, Fredrick (Berta) Peterson of Butte des Morts, Wis. and Elroy (Gloria) Peterson of Red Wing; 2 sisters-in-law, Iva Larson of Red Wing and Yvonne Peterson of Vienna, Vir.; dear friend and cousin, Marie Goodier and many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leslie; brothers, Willis and Kenneth Peterson; step-mother, Eleanor Peterson and sons-in-law, Gregory Bishop and Ron Rotell.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, July 28, at First Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to MN Masonic Home Care Center and/or chapel fund, MN Relay for Life Mississippi Shuffle, or First Lutheran Church.
