Marlene Alice Hawkenson

May 30, 1930 — February 6, 2016

Marlene Alice Hawkenson, 85, of Red Wing, died Saturday, February 6, 2016 at St. Brigid's at Hi Park surrounded by her family. She was born May 30, 1930 in Red Wing to Oscar and Alice (Swanson) Elander. She grew up and attended school in Red Wing, graduating from Red Wing Central High School. She met her future husband Eugene Hawkenson while passing on the street and the couple fell in love instantly. They were married in 1947. They made their home in Red Wing and went on to raise four children. Marlene was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, responsible for starting the church's library and its prayer chain. Her faith was important to her and she enjoyed her time in bible study there. She was a long standing member of a card club where she was particularly skilled at playing Bridge. She also enjoyed painting, skiing and reading. She and Gene loved to dance together and they shared a reputation for being the cutest couple in Red Wing. She was a hardworking, dedicated and loving care taker all of her life. She never complained and even in her later years, when her health was failing, she was always smiling and ready to offer a hug.
She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Gene; four children, Bonnie (Tom) Koester of Red Wing, Kathie (Mike) Buck of Tubac, Ariz., Jeff (Pam) Hawkenson of Red Wing and Jim Hawkenson of Red Wing; six grandchildren, Tami (Charley) Bryant of Red Wing, Michele (Chris) Tollefson of Rosemount, Jason (Shawna) Stinson of Minneapolis, Joshua Stinson of Washington, Eric (Maggie) Hawkenson of Red Wing and Jennifer (Nick) Jacobson of Red Wing; 11 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
She is preceded in death by two sisters, Margie Elander and Jean Combs; and her parents.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Pastor Kristen Schlauderaff officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the church or to Heartland Hospice. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
