Obituary Notice
Michael J. Childs, Sr.
Michael James Childs, Sr., 69, of Welch, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2014 at his home. He was born May 2, 1945, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Lorenzo and Lucille (Campbell) Childs. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1964. On Feb. 19, 1966, he married Myra Moser, and they later divorced. He furthered his education at Rochester Community College and Dunwoody Institute, graduating in 1968 with an automotive degree. From 1968-1992 he was employed with Sears Roebuck and Company and he also worked at the casino from 1986-1993 and received a diploma in casino management in 1993. He served on the Prairie Island Tribal Council for two terms, from 1993-1997. Mike was united in marriage to Linda (Morehouse) Hague on July 7, 2007 and they lived in Welch.
Mike was a car enthusiast, something that started in him as a young man. From racing in the 60's at Hiawatha Speedway, to working on cars and teaching others about fixing cars, he never lost his love for them--especially his 1946 Ford. He also enjoyed going to the movies, Mama's Pizza, watching the wild turkeys in the backyard, fishing for catfish, interacting with people and guests at the casino, and most of all, he loved his children and family.
He will be missed by many, including his wife, Linda of Welch; 4 children, Margo (Mark) Bellanger of Prairie Island, Mike Jr. (Wendy) of Welch, Matthew (Amy) of Red Wing and Marshal Childs of Iowa City, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 4 step-children, Tanya (Twain) Beyer, James (Melissa) Hague Jr, Martin (Ashley) Hague and Kari Hague; 3 sisters, Ramona Childs-Jones, Claudine Sellers and Reta Childs all of Prairie Island and a brother, Alan (Melissa) Childs, Sr. of Prairie Island.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Christine Childs and two brothers, Dennis and Dale Childs.
A celebration of Mike's life will be from 2-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014, at the Prairie Island Community Center. Arrangements handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
