Murlin Curtis Sycks, age 97, of Red Wing died Saturday, July 29, 2017 at the Red Wing Health Center. He was born March 3, 1920 in Red Wing to Curtis and Emily (Lundberg) Sycks. He attended Red Wing schools, and graduated from Red Wing High School in 1938. He worked at Douglas Aircraft in California, until he entered into the service. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in Europe where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After being honorably discharged from the Army Murlin moved back to Red Wing. He married Cecilia Diesing on October 9, 1948 in Plum City, WI. He worked at Johnson Tire Shop in Red Wing and was a Mail Carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Red Wing until retiring in 1981. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Burnson-Lillyblad V.F.W. Post 1218 and the National Association of Letter Carriers. Murlin enjoyed dancing, watching birds, going to the casino, and was an avid Vikings and Twins fan.
He is survived by two sons, Douglas and Grant both of Red Wing; two daughters, Barbara (Joel) Hanson and Karleen (Scott) Shellum all of Red Wing; four grandchildren, Trina Marsh, Kurtis (Krista Williams) Hanson, Emily Shellum and Andrew Shellum; great-grandchildren, Allison Marsh, Lincoln Hanson and Alexa Williams; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Cecilia; and sister, Doris McIntosh.
Mass of Resurrection will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 4, 2017 at the Church of St. Joseph with Thomas M. Kommers presiding. Burial with military honors will take place at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church on Friday. Memorials are preferred to the church. Online condolences can be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
