Robert Shannon Serres, 86, Red Wing, passed away peacefully after a 4 year courageous battle with cancer at his home on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 with his family and his favorite cat, Fluffy at his side. He was born February 16, 1928 in New Trier, MN, the son of Markus and Ursula (Shannon) Serres. He graduated from Etter Tech in 1943. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II, April 17, 1946 to October, 1947. He worked at Red Wing Shoe as a cutter for 43 ½ years and he was the owner/operator of BE & K pilot car for 20 years. He also worked for Houghton and Dicke Auction Service. On September 14, 1950 he married Elaine Wangen. He was a member of First Lutheran Church and Burnson-Lillyblad VFW Post 1218. He enjoyed stock car racing and motorcycle hill climbing.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine: daughter, Sue (Doug Hindal) Harteneck of Zumbrota; son, Kevin Serres of Red Wing; grandchildren: Kristin Decker, Melissa Erickson, Matt Decker, Jonathan Serres and Anna Kelly Serres; great-grandchildren: Joshua Decker, Lucas Kells, Carter Erickson, Hunter Erickson, Landon Decker and Katlyn Decker; brothers: Fred and Tim Serres; sisters: Rose Ann Reinardy and Betty Lou Werner; and sisters-in-law, Janice French, Shirley Wangen, Lois Dahling and Arlene "Cookie" Serres. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral service will be 2 p. m. Monday, September 15, 2014 at First Lutheran Church with Reverend William Odermann officiating. Burial will be in Burnside Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the Ronald McDonald House.
