Sherman P. Coltvet

Funeral services for The Reverend Sherman P. Coltvet will be held Friday February 5th at 11:00 AM at Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester. The Rev. Dr. Norman Wahl will officiate. Burial will follow on Saturday February 6th at 1:00 PM at the city cemetery in Radcliffe, Iowa. Visitation will be Thursday February 4th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester, and prayers will be said at 7:00 PM. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Friday.

Rev. Sherman P. Coltvet, 75, of Rochester, Minnesota died at home surrounded by family on Saturday January 30, 2016. He was born on April 5, 1940 in Bottineau, North Dakota to Rev. Benjamin and Hattie (Hanson) Coltvet. During his childhood, he lived in Fertile, Duncombe, and rural Estherville, Iowa. He graduated from Gruver High School and went to Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, where he met his wife Rachel Maakestad. Sherman went on to graduate from Augsburg College in Minneapolis and Luther Seminary in Saint Paul. On March 21, 1964, Sherman and Rachel were married in Radcliffe, Iowa. As a Lutheran pastor, Sherman served at First Lutheran in Valley Springs, South Dakota, and Palisades in rural Luverne, Minnesota, Emmanuel in Longview, Washington, Trinity in Wanamingo, Minnesota, and Our Savior's in Rochester. He retired from active ministry in June of 2003. In his retirement he enjoyed driving motor coaches around the country. He was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church. He had numerous interests including restoring and building cars. He had a lifetime love of music and especially enjoyed sacred choral music. Musical expression was a big part of the Coltvet family life.

Sherman is survived by his wife, Rachel; his children, Elizabeth (James) McGeeney of Rochester, Timothy (Maren) Coltvet of Stillwater, Stephanie (Paul) Coltvet Erdmann of Minneapolis; daughter-in-law, Sarah Coltvet of Sauk Centre; and grandchildren, Alex Arnold, Linnea and Anders Coltvet, Anna and Anh McGeeney, Madeline and August Erdmann. Sherman is also survived by siblings, Marjorie (Robert) Jamieson, Helen Clarke, Katherine (Stephen) Radtke, Cordelia (Kenneth) Hoffmann, Benjamin (Margit) Coltvet, and Dory (Gerry) Borscheid; and a host of other relatives and friends. Sherman preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Hattie Coltvet; and a son, Jonathan Coltvet.

If so desired, memorials may be directed to Bethel Lutheran Church, or the Mayo Foundation for research of Multiple Myeloma.
