Thomas Earl Jerviss

April 22, 1940 — March 18, 2018

Thomas was born into this beautiful world in Preston, MN, to Charles Edward Sr and Naida Carol (Winch) Jerviss. He joined older sisters, Darlene and Dorothy. He was later joined by younger brothers Charles Edward (Eddie) Jr, and Stanley. They enjoyed playing together as kids and many family get-togethers and outings. In 1958, Tom graduated from Rochester High School and immediately enlisted in the US Navy. He was, however, denied entry due to amblyopia.

Tom then began a life-long career of entrepreneurial jobs including, but not limited to: roofing, siding, painting, carpet installation, vacuum cleaner sales, and bulk newspaper deliveries to surrounding small towns. He even combed the Florida beaches selling sunglasses, his family being the recipient of many styles and shapes. He served as a MN State Peace Officer (Olmsted County Deputy Sheriff) in the mid-1980s. He then found his life passion serving as a US Department of State Diplomatic Security Officer working worldwide in new office building construction. His 1990-2010 travels took him to Brazil, Burma/Myanmar, Chile, Germany, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, the UK, Yugoslavia, and many other foreign countries, where he made many local friends and thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the local customs.

Remembered by many as a jokester, fun-loving, kind, intelligent, and sweet, Tommy rarely missed a family get-together at which he loved to share his favorite flavored chicken nuggets; they were delish! We believe Tom never married because he was so loved by his nieces and nephews and then great-nieces and nephews. Tom lived his life to the fullest and will always be loved and remembered for his gentleness, humbleness, and kindness...especially whenever we hear Tim McGraw's "Always Be Humble and Kind" or read Linda Ellis' "The Dash."

Tom is survived by his sister, Darlene Enderson, Rochester; brother Eddie Jerviss, Jr, Eyota; nieces Cindy (Enderson) Macrafic, Sara (Gustine) Bass (who, along with her immediate family, faithfully and lovingly cared for him during these last few years), and Christine Jerviss; nephews Bruce Gustine, Craig Enderson, Michael Muzio, Steven Jerviss, and Aaron, Matthew, and Kyle Jerviss; along with several great, as well as great-great, nieces and nephews, and many other friends and family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Sr and Naida, sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and Richard Gustine, brother Stanley Jerviss, sister-in-law Mary Jerviss, brother-in-law Bert Enderson, and great-niece Melissa Schaefer.

The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers of Samaritan Bethany, particularly the Essex House, for making his time in your care the best it could possibly be. We will celebrate Tom's life and bid our final farewell to him on Saturday, April 28, 2018, 11:00am, Samaritan Bethany Chapel, Rochester. In lieu of flowers, Tom specifically requested memorials to Mayo Clinic, Amblyopia Research.
