Tom Sumter, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016, one day after his 64th birthday. He was born on Oct. 10, 1952, in Prescott, Wisconsin, to Raymond and Bobette (Lewiston) Sumter. He graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1970 and started working at the SB Foot Tanning Company. On September 4, 1971, he married Rita Beardsley and they lived in Ellsworth prior to moving to Red Wing. Together they had 2 children and they later divorced. He retired from the Tannery in March of 2015. Tom enjoyed fishing, watching baseball-the Bay City Bombers and MN Twins, watching westerns and playing cards.
He is survived by his daughter, Corinne "Corie" Sumter of Red Wing; son, Matthew (Susan Gilbert) Sumter of Mesa, AZ; 3 grandchildren, Anthony Sumter and Acyanna and Amariyon Ingram; sister, Karen (Darryl) Jorgenson of Spring Valley, WI; niece, Bobbie (Robby) Jaeger and a nephew, Tod (Mel) Jorgenson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Larry.
