Verdelma Strauss

February 25, 1924 — June 7, 2017

Verdelma Maxine (Struble) Strauss passed away Wednesday, June 07, 2017 at the age of 93 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. She was born on February 25, 1924 in Winona, MN to Glen and Loretta (Boehlke) Struble. Verdelma attended Winona Elementary School and graduated from Lake City High School as the Valedictorian.

Following graduation, Verdelma worked at the local Boxrud lumber yard in the office and at the bank. Verdelma married Clarence Strauss on June 8, 1944 in Winona, MN. Together they had four children. Verdelma continued to carry on the family farm after the loss of her husband in 1962.

Verdelma moved to Red Wing, MN and worked at Jostens for ten years. She was very active in the Goodhue County Senior Citizens and the Pink Lady's of the Red Wing hospital. She was a very active member in both St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bellechester and St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Wing. She was President of the Mission Sewing group at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and was also involved in their Catholic Church Women (CCW), in which she received the Southeastern Deanery Volunteer award. Verdelma was also awarded Goodhue County Volunteer of the Year. She volunteered at the St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School in Red Wing and was a member of the Catholic Daughters. Her life has been an example of strong faith, daily gratitude, positivity, and perseverance. She always had open arms and ended visits with a hug and a smile.

During her full and happy life, she enjoyed knitting and crocheting, mission sewing, taking short bus trips, playing cards, recycling cards, polka dancing, listening to old time country music, and watching baseball. She was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. Verdelma enjoyed attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's 4-H and school events. Above all, Verdelma loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her many nieces and nephews.

Verdelma is survived by two daughters, Barb (Ken) Kobs of Lake City and Jan (Bill) McNallan of Pine Island; two sons, Jim (Jeanette) Strauss and Don (Gayle) Strauss of Bellechester; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Joan Struble.
