Victor John Wiech, age 96, longtime resident of Lake City passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at St. Elizabeth's Health Care Center in Wabasha. He was born on June 24, 1918 in Red Wing to William and Grace (Lindquist) Wiech. On June 8, 1942 he married Marie Hageman at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake City. He and Marie started their life together in Cheyenne, Wyoming where Victor was stationed in the U.S. Army. He was in active service in WWII in Europe from 1942 - 1945, landing at Normandy on D+6. When Victor left for overseas duty, Marie returned to Lake City, which is where they made their home and raised their seven children.
After returning home Victor opened an Automotive sales and service station in Frontenac. He then worked as a mechanic at Redmond's Auto Sales and Service in Lake City, Red Wing Marine, Lake City NAPA and he also owned Wiech's DX and AAA on Lyon Avenue in Lake City. He was also employed at Wild Wings Gallery in Lake City until retiring at the age of 84. He enjoyed restoring Ford Model A and Model T automobiles from original parts while at the DX station, often enlisting the help of his sons in the restorations. He could repair almost anything and enjoyed knowing how thing work. He loved wood working and built numerous pieces of furniture and other wood working projects, and operated a home picture frame shop. Victor was a kind, generous and unassuming man, always willing to give a helping hand to those who needed it. He was a loving father and adored his numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus. He was a life member of VFW Post #110 and a member of American Legion Post #110 of Lake City.
He is survived by his two daughters, Marjorie (Jerry) Dunbar of Lake City and Marilyn (Cortlen) Hauge of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; five sons, Charles of Missoula, MT, Raymond of Lake City, Steven (Brenda) of Mazeppa, Vernon of Rock Island, IL, and Eugene (Bonnie) Wiech of Detroit, MI; 13 grandchildren, Jodie, Nikki, Chad, Kelly, Marc, Cassie, Jeff, Joey, Jenna, Eva, Jay, Jessica, and Ashley; many great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert (Ruth) Wiech of Hager City, WI.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; one sister, Marjorie; and two brothers, Donald and William.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 14, 2015 at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, Lake City with Father Joseph Pete officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Lake City American Legion Post #110 and VFW Post #8729 with be performing the Military Rite's.
