Virgil John Burfeind

Virgil J. Burfeind, age 99, of Zumbrota died on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the Zumbrota Health Services Center. The memorial service will be Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 11:00 am at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota with Pastor Wayne Schoch officiating. The visitation will be Wednesday, January 17 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel from 4-7 pm and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Zumbrota Cemetery with Military Honors.
Virgil John Burfeind was born on April 10, 1918 to Emil and Lillie (Luth) Burfeind in Belvidere Township. He attended Belvidere Country School until the 8th grade. Virgil then started working for several farmers in the area. He married Hazel Schumacher on April 8, 1941 they lived in Goodhue and had two children. Virgil worked in construction for a few local companies before serving in the military. Virgil entered into the United States Army in January 1944; he served in WWII and was a recipient of the Purple Heart medal, good conduct metal and bronze star metal. After being honorably discharged in 1945 he returned home and moved his family to Zumbrota. He continued his career in construction, operating heavy machinery. Virgil retired in the early 80s. Virgil and Hazel enjoyed going to Arizona, dancing, and playing cards with friends. Hazel passed in 1990. After being widowed eleven years, Virgil married Darlene "Dot" Gordon in 2001. They made their home in Red Wing and lived many happy years together, Dot passed in 2015. Virgil moved back to Zumbrota in spring of 2016 and became a resident at the Bridge's. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, VFW Post 5727 Stary-Yerka, and American Legion Post 0183.
Virgil enjoyed golfing, taking country drives, visiting with friends, going to the VFW Walleye Feed, and spending time with family.
Virgil is survived by his son, Keith Burfeind of Kimball; three grandchildren, Jamie (Randy) Gunhus, Kelli Burfeind, Jon (Sara) Burfeind; five great-grandchildren, Whitney, Lamar, Ella, Avae and Hans; three stepchildren, Donene Gordon, Tim (Gail) Gordon, and Ann Gordon; eight step grandchildren, Stef, Den, Rebecca, Mac, Paul, Sam, Kelsey, and Alison Gordon; five step great-grandchildren, Lucy, Foster, Vivian, McKenna and Emma.
Virgil was preceded in death by his loving wife, Hazel; his loving wife, Dot; daughter, Judy Bour; daughter-in-law, Marcia Burfeind; and five siblings.
Memorials are preferred to Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota.
