Wayne W. Benck

March 13, 1939 — September 25, 2017

Wayne Walter Benck, 78, of Maiden Rock, died Monday September 25, 2017 at Atrium Post-Acute Care Center in Ellsworth. He was born March 13, 1939 on the family farm to Walter and Evelyn (Smith) Benck in Granada, Minnesota. He grew up on the farm and attended country school. He continued to work on the farm even after his parents moved to the city. Wayne met his future wife while at a dance in Fox Lake. He married Verlene Mayland on October 3, 1959 in Titonka Iowa. For a time the couple lived on the farm before moving around Iowa. Together they owned a Hardware store catering to the local farmers. Wayne also did plumbing and electrical work on the area farms. Eventually, the family moved to Wisconsin and Wayne worked as a maintenance man for Treasure Island. Wayne also continued to farm until a tractor accident forced him to retire. Wayne loved to hunt and fish. He made yearly trips to Wyoming to hunt deer and elk as well as trips to Lake of the Woods in Canada to fish for Walleye. The typical family vacation was a week spent fishing at the cabin. In his younger years, he enjoyed polka dancing. Wayne was a fix-it kind of guy and his family remembers many cold nights he spent fixing the furnaces of other farmers and friends. He loved his trees and birds and enjoyed making blue bird houses. His friends at APAC will miss hearing him whistling to the birds.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Verlene of Maiden Rock; five children, Barb (Dave) Bethel of St. Charles, Missouri, Betty ("Beaky" Richard) Dakovich of Des Moines, Iowa, Kenny (Lorna) Benck of Bay City, Wisconsin, Gene (Andi) Benck of Hager City and Kaylene Nielsen of Stillwater, Minnesota; 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Janice (Eldon) Tietje of Seattle, Washington and Sharon (Dale) Rasmussen of Fairmont, Minnesota.
He is preceded in death by an infant son, Dennis Wayne Benck; brother, Larry and his parents.
