Alton Clair Thies, 86, of Red Wing died on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at his home. Alton was born on September 30, 1930 to William and Clara (Windmiller) Thies in New Hampton, Iowa. He attended schools in New Hampton and Bay City. He enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War from August 1951 until August 1953. After his honorable discharge, he returned home and met Arlotte Johnson. The couple married in September of 1954. Alton worked at the SB Foot Tannery for 46 years until his retirement. Together he and Arlie raised three children, and made family their priority. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Burnson- Lillyblad VFW Post#1218, and the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54. He was a lover of animals and found great enjoyment in feeding the birds, loved to travel and visit new places, was an avid Red Wing sports fan, enjoyed dancing in his younger years, found enjoyment in a round of golf with his friends, and above all was a true and loyal friend to many.
Alton is survived by his wife, Arlie, of 63 years; children Ruth (Brad) Christian of Minnetonka, MN, Wes (Nancy) Thies of Hayward, WI, Marilyn Thies of Rochester, MN; grandchildren Katie (Mike) Cashman of Denver, CO and Adam Thies of Minneapolis; great granddaughter Lydia Cashman of Denver, CO; brothers Harold of Minneapolis and Delbert (Delores) of Hinton, Oklahoma; many nieces and nephews; and brother and sister in laws. The family would like extend a very special thanks to Bruce and Jody Ohlhaber for all of their love and care.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 2, 2017 at United Methodist Church with the Reverend Clay Oglesbee officiating. Visitation will be 4 - 6 p.m., Sunday, October 1 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson Mahn Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to hurricane relief.
