Arlin Rosalie Schmidt

September 4, 1924 — April 24, 2019

Arlin Rosalie (Janisch) Schmidt, 94, of Red Wing, died April 24, 2019 at her home. She was born on September 4, 1924 to Helen (Seifert) and Henry Janisch in Lost Creek, Wisconsin. She graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1943 and went on to attend nursing school. She spent time training at Swedish Hospital and Children's Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota and was a Senior Cadet Nurse for the US Public Health Service at Marine Hospital in Seattle Washington in 1946. She returned and graduated from St. John's Hospital School of Nursing in September of 1946. On a blind date, she met the love of her life, Stuart Schmidt. They were married at Immaculate Conception Church in Lost Creek on August 5, 1947. They lived their whole married lives in Red Wing and together, they raised eight children. Her career as an RN spanned over 30 years and included time at Red Wing City Hospital, St. John's Hospital and the Red Wing Correctional Facility. She enjoyed traveling, and she and Stuart ventured to Texas, Montana, Michigan, Washington and Hawaii during their retirement. She volunteered her time as a Guardian Ad Litum, helping at Red Cross blood drives, as a CCD teacher, and as an Election Judge. She was a member of the Red Wing Country Club, participating in many leagues and achieved TWO hole-in-ones! She was an avid card player- participating in several bridge groups during her life, and challenging her kids and grandkids at Euchre regularly. She was a seamstress and quilter, making many outfits and 9 patch quilts for her kids and grandkids. She loved watching the Minnesota Twins and could be found cheering them on from her recliner each game day. She was a long-time member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Wing. She always had a jigsaw puzzle in progress in her living room, and coffee and treats in the kitchen. Above all, she valued and loved being with her family.

She is survived by her eight children, Jane Gisslen of Red Wing, Gail (Daniel) Ryan of Goodhue, Patrice (Bill) Rooney of Red Wing, Mary (Chuck Busdosh) Schmidt of Red Wing, Margaret (George) Noesen of Red Wing, Steven Schmidt of Red Wing, Stacie (John) Gorman of Red Wing and Andrea (David) Scamehorn of St. Anthony, Minnesota; 15 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, one step great-grandchild; one sister, Marge Leehe of Elmwood, Wisconsin; 3 sisters-in-law, Jan Schmidt of Deerwood, Minnesota, Polly Nystrom of Austin, Minnesota, and Catherine "Katy" Jorgensen of Red Wing; her cat, Tiggy and many other relatives and friends.
