Avis E. Koenig, 97, of Rochester, passed away Friday, February 15, 2019. She was born March 8, 1921 on the family farm near Mayville, North Dakota, to Selma and Melvin Thorstad.
Avis grew up on the family farm and attended a one room schoolhouse through eighth grade. She had to learn the English language because Norwegian was the only thing spoken in their house growing up.
She was foster parent in Colorado Springs, CO for many years and also an emergency foster parent for infants in need. She was genuinely in love with each child she cared for, and never forgot a single one.
Avis is survived by two children, Kristi Koenig-Kastler of Kasson, MN and son Kenneth Koenig of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 2 grandchildren, Richard Kastler and Cheyenne Koenig-Loyd; 3 great-grandchildren, Brayden and Ryan Kastler and Madison Koenig-Loyd.
She was preceded in death by her husband David; brothers Lloyd, Milton, Wendell, Erwin and sister Janice; grandchild LeeAnna Kastler.
Avis will have services in Colorado at a later date and be interred at Fort Logan Cemetery, in Denver, next to her husband David. Online condolences are welcome and may be shared at mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
