Avis Joan Skjeie
December 20, 1935 — August 3, 2018
Avis Skjeie, age 82, of Oronoco, formerly of Wanamingo, died on August 3, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Hospital - Rochester, St. Mary's Campus. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, August 13 at 3:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo with Pastor Christopher Culuris officiating. Visitation will be on Monday for one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements were made with Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota.
On December 20, 1935, Avis Joan Olson came dancing into this world as a gift from God to Alfred and Jeanette Olson. She was the proud big sister of Carol Olson Anderson. Avis grew up in St. Paul and graduated from Monroe High School in 1954. Through her cousin Jerry Grothe, she met a handsome farm boy on a blind date, and on May 5, 1956, this city slicker married Orvin Jeroy Romo and "Goodbye City Life" she moved to the farm, where they worked hard, had many great friends, had lots of laughs, danced often, and raised their children (Randy, Julie, Marcy, Peggy, and bonus child Linda) to be fun-loving, hard-working people as well. Avis loved being the life of the party. She loved to laugh and make sure others were having fun as well. Her door was always open. Stop in for a meal, a haircut, ice cream, a game of cards, or just to talk, she loved it all. Her great grandkids lovingly called her GG, and she loved telling people it stood for "Goofy Grandma" and the kids agreed, she was fun!
Even though she went through many very difficult struggles in her life, her faith in God remained strong, and on August 3, 2018, she was called home. Throughout her 82 years she was surrounded by so many people who loved her, and she loved them whole-heartedly. In addition to her wonderful sister Carol, she has a large family who are missing her dearly: Julie and Jeff Hemker and their children and grandchilden: Jayme and Adam Nickelsen, Kailee and Gavin; Jessie Hemker, Blake and Brody; Josie and Aaron Brennhofer, Rylie and Keaton; Marcy and Mike Goodman and their children and grandchildren: Nick and Sara Goodman, Evan and Ellie; Ozzie Goodman and Karli Herhoff; Peggy and Tom Weeks and their children and grandchildren: Lacey and Mark Bauer, Carter and Braxton; Ryan Weeks; Linda and Kerry Olson and their children and grandchildren: Peggy and Scott Beers, Joe, Alex, Chandler, Hanna; Shaun and Patty Olson, Eliza, Paul; Sisters in law Jo Buck, Irene Smith, Doris Johnson; Cousins, Nieces, Nephews, and their families, and 11 Godchildren.
Memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church or Salvation Army.
