David A. Hartwig

January 6, 1945 — January 12, 2018

Dr. David Arthur Hartwig, age 73, longtime resident of Rochester and formerly of Pine Island, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, January 12, 2018. His wishes were to be cremated.

Dave was born January 6, 1945 in Osage, Iowa. The oldest of three children, his parents were Harland and Elaine (Albrecht) Hartwig. He graduated in 1963 from Osage High School and from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1969 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. In his last year of college, he married Barbara Harwood from Waterloo, Iowa, on May 26, 1968. After graduation, they moved to Minnesota where he worked in private practices in Waconia, New Ulm, and Caledonia until 1971. In 1971, he went to work in Albert Lea for the USDA as a Veterinary Medical Officer until 1979. During those years, he was able to hunt and fish in Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, New York, Alberta Canada, British Columbia Canada, North West Territories Canada, and a month in Alaska. In 1979, he bought a veterinary practice in Pine Island where he did large and small animal work. In 1996, he was approached by the USDA about coming back to work for them. The practice was sold and he returned to the USDA in 1997 as a Supervisory Veterinary Medical Officer until his retirement in June 2013.

Dave was an avid and lifelong Green Bay Packers fan and was proud to be a shareholder of the team. His family enjoyed his enthusiasm. Besides hunting and fishing, he enjoyed raising and showing Columbia sheep, was active in the New Haven Sodbusters 4-H group, loved traveling, camping, boating, gardening, woodworking, his annual pheasant hunting trip with his son, and spending time with his family and his grandchildren.

Dave is survived by his wife, Barb, of 49 years; daughter, Heather, of St. Paul, son Heath (Melissa) of Pine Island; granddaughter Isabelle of Pine Island, grandson Gabriel of Pine Island; sister Robyn Hartwig of Rochester; brother Mark (Mary) Hartwig of Elgin, Illinois; a niece Marilee (Paul) Tuite of Minneapolis; a nephew Geoff (Vanessa) Reu of Chicago, Illinois; uncle Melvin (Yvonne) Albrecht of Leroy, Minnesota; and numerous cousins.
