David James Scheitel

April 21, 1948 — February 24, 2019

David James Scheitel passed away February 24th, 2019 at the age of 70, at his home in Redwood Falls, MN. He was born April 21st, 1948 at the family home in Potsdam, MN the 8th child of Herbert and Dorothy (Schye) Scheitel.

David attended Vasa Elementary School in Vasa, MN, and then Burnside Elementary in Red Wing, MN. He graduated from Red Wing High School in 1966 and from Bemidji State in 1970 with a Bachelors of Science - History & German. On Sept. 7th, 1968 he married Bonnie Hove. Their union produced 4 children. They divorced after 18 years. He later entered into a long-term relationship with his partner, Patricia Moritz.

David taught History and German for 3 years before going into the tools sales business for himself. He later worked for WalMart in Redwood Falls and Jackpot Junction in Morton, MN. Throughout he was a long-time employee of Lee's Janitorial Service in Redwood Falls.

David is survived by his partner of 30 years, Patricia Moritz, his daughter, Tracey (Mark) Totty, of Albany, IL, grandchildren Kristopher, Jeremy, Jesse, Teasha (Tony), Wyatt (Amelia) and Briar and great grandchildren Harley, Karsen, Mason, Araya, Emberly, Ryland and Taleah. His son Jamie (Angie) Scheitel, of Burnsville, MN, grandchildren, Lina and Calvin and son, Brodie (Megan) Scheitel, of Springfield, MN, grandchildren Emily, Henry, Jack and Oscar. Patricia's children, Jason Moritz, of Redwood Falls, MN and Chad Moritz, of Redwood Falls, MN, grandchildren Eli and Aliyah. He is also survived by his siblings, Doris Farley of AZ, Herbert (Kay) Scheitel of Worthington, MN, Mildred Niebeling of Welch, MN, Florence Keppers, Don Thompson (Ruth) of St. Paul, MN, Dwight Scheitel of Red Wing, MN, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was a brilliant man who enjoyed listening to country music, watching westerns, playing and teaching his children and grandchildren chess, tennis, card games and he was an undefeated trivia player. He loved to do daily crossword puzzles and even play video games.

David was a huge sports fan throughout his life. He was an avid Vikings, Twins and Wild (North Stars) fan and loved watching his grandchildren play t-ball, baseball, basketball and everything in between.

He was also a life-long automobile enthusiast. He could fix anything and did so often. He could identify a ‘67 Pontiac coming down the road at 120 mph with frightening accuracy.

David was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Jodie Scheitel, and siblings, Ruth, Myrtle, Virginia, Charles and Robert Scheitel and Ruth Thompson.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, March 1st, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, Red Wing, MN and for one hour prior to the service. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2nd at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.

A Celebration of Life is also being planned for later in the Spring in Redwood Falls and will be announced when plans are finalized.
