Donavon P. "Don" Schutz, age 89, of Pine Island passed away on Friday, December 6, 2019 at his home in Pine Island. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, December 20, 2019 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM at the Charles Cowden American Legion Post #184 in Pine Island. Private family burial will be in Pine Island Cemetery.
Donavon Peter Schutz was born on September 11, 1930 in New Haven Township, Olmsted County, MN to Victor and Rosalie (nee Swee) Schutz. Don attended country school at District #80 school through the sixth grade and seventh through twelfth grade in Pine Island, graduating in 1948. Don started working as a carpenter for the Gustine Brothers Co. and he joined the Rochester National Guard. On July 1, 1950 Don was united in marriage to Phyllis M. Dohrmann in Pine Island. Don was called up to active duty in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Camp Rucker, AL. He was honorably discharged on October 16, 1951. Don started farming with his uncle Ray Schutz and in 1952 he took over control of his own farm. Don and Phyllis farmed for forty four years. After retiring, Don worked at the Pine Island Golf Course for seven years. Don enjoyed collecting old farm tools and was a member of the Charles Cowden American Legion Post #184 in Pine Island.
Don is survived by his wife of sixty nine years, Phyllis; two daughters, Margaret Schutz of St. Paul and Katherine (Joe) Miller of Cottage Grove; two grandsons, Craig Miller and his special friend, Jennifer and Curt (Ashley) Miller; one great-granddaughter, Ella Miller and two sisters, Becky Amundson and Debbie Burr.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Rose and Vic; three brothers, Daryl, Wayne and Rick Schutz and one sister, Jackie Schutz.
