Edgar C. Goldston

November 24, 1927 — August 24, 2017

Dr. Edgar Clinton Goldston, a longtime resident of Rochester, passed away on August 24, 2017 in Lake City, MN.

Dr. Goldston was born in Fayetteville, NC on November 24, 1927, and grew up in Petersburg, VA, the second of three boys, son of Thomas Jennings Goldston and Mary Maxwell Goldston. His passion for medicine was seeded at a young age when he became bed-ridden for nearly an entire year with meningitis. With the family doctor's constant encouragement through his illness, Dr. Goldston decided that he would work to become a doctor and help make a real difference in people's health.

After graduating from Petersburg High School, Edgar earned his way to attend college by working on the railroad. Dr. Goldston graduated Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Richmond with a Bachelor of Science in 1950, and went on to attend medical school at the Medical College of Virginia where he met, and in 1954 married Anne Smith, his wife of 51 years, and earned his M.D. degree in 1954. He was a member of the Army Medical Corps based in Fort Sam Houston TX and Fort Story VA. In 1960, he moved his family to Rochester, MN for a residency in Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic.

In April 1964, Dr. Goldston joined the Internal Medicine division at the Mayo Clinic, where he devoted his 32-year career to taking time with his patients and educating them on how to prevent potential health issues in the future. In the 1970's, he was instrumental in laying the groundwork for establishing Mayo's Preventive Medicine division, later known as the Preventive, Occupational & Aerospace Medicine and most currently the Executive Health Division. Dr. Goldston always had such respect and appreciation for the collegial, consultative model of care of Mayo and loved walking the halls and taking in Grand Rounds. He counts among his dearest friends former colleagues and patients during his many years at Mayo.

His family and medical practice were always his highest priorities. Dr. Goldston and his wife were fortunate to have enjoyed traveling the U.S. and Europe, and he was an avid model train collector. He loved music - notably classical music and Opera - and was a classic film buff. He and his wife were animal lovers and bred Beagles when their children were young, later adopting homeless dogs and/or cats.

Dr. Goldston is survived by his three children; his son Edgar C. Goldston, Jr., M.D. of Park City, Utah; two daughters Sissi Goldston of Rochester, Minnesota and Georgie Goldston Smith of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his wife Anne Smith Goldston, M.D., his parents Thomas J and Mary (Maxwell) Goldston, and two brothers Thomas J Goldston Jr and Harold M Goldston.

A private family service and burial will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, VA.
