Eric J. Bergstralh, age 65 of Mazeppa died on Friday evening, September 28, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Hospital-Rochester, St. Marys Campus. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at 2:00 PM at United Redeemer Lutheran Church, 560 West 3rd Street in Zumbrota with Rev. Dr. Marggi Pleiss-Sippola officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Eric John Bergstralh was born on June 22, 1953 in Zumbrota, MN to John E. and Mary M. (Siems) Bergstralh. Eric grew up on the farm in rural Mazeppa, attended Mazeppa Public Schools and graduated from Mazeppa High School in 1971. Eric earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and Geography from Mankato State College in 1975 and his Master's Degree in Statistics from Iowa State University in 1980. That same year, Eric started working for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. In May of 1980 he married Debra A. Sharp in Amboy, MN. They made their home in rural Mazeppa. At the time of his retirement in 2014 he was an Assistant Professor of Biostatistics at the Mayo Clinic. Eric enjoyed hiking and making new trails in the woods, reading, traveling, time at the cabin and most importantly, spending time with family and friends.
Eric is survived by his wife, Debra; children, Aaron Bergstralh of Pine Island, Adam Bergstralh of Madison, WI and Carrie (Matthew) Wojick of St. Paul; brother, Jim (Ruth) Siems of Mazeppa and nieces and nephews.
Eric was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary and sister, Diane Siems.
Eric's family wants to give special thanks to the transplant staff on Mary Brigh 6D, friends and family, and Pastor Marggi. They were all such an important part of Eric's life over the last few months.
